Joey Zhao

Joey Zhao’s diptych melds techniques of both abstraction and representational painting, subverting the male gaze through the placement of her feminine figures. Her figures possess agency and invite the audience to view her work in a way that subverts traditional portrayals of the female nude. Themes presented in Zhao’s series include questioning objectification, interrogating the purpose of the female nude in fine art settings, and the exploration of meaning through formal aspects such as color and composition.
