Shannon West’s (2020) process of experimentation is integral to her series of work, The Cloistered Book. West balances precision with random outcomes, selecting books in her series based on content, titles, covers, or binding. She then places her books into a Borax solution, boiling them at various temperatures, transforming the books into sculptural items that embrace the uncertainty of their final form.
