“First Contact” by Caroline Manley is a 26-page, full-color comic inspired by aspects of the classic American sitcom, campy science fiction B-movies, and 1950s retrofuturism. The plot centers around an overworked salaryman named Ángel, whose world is turned upside down when a meteor crashlands in his backyard one evening. Peering inside the meteorite, he is shocked to discover a hulking alien lifeform and they quickly strike up a wholesome and unlikely friendship. Manley’s comic seeks to subvert well-known genre conventions by applying them in fresh, imaginative ways.
